Southern India Mills Association appeals govt to remove duties on cotton import Coimbatore, Mar 5 (KNN) The Southern India Mills Association has urged the central government to remove duties on the import of cotton as it is drastically affecting the textile industry of India.

Due to this international buyers are not placing orders owing to cotton shortage in the market which is creating challenges for Indian textile mills.

“We have taken it very strongly with the Finance Minister to remove the import duty from cotton,” said Ravi Sam, Chairman of the Southern India Mills Association.

He stated that this move wouldn’t impact the farmers of India.

“The Indian farmers would have sold off their cotton and made a considerable amount of money and will be ready for sowing for the next season as the import of cotton will start in the month of May,” Sam added.

He cautioned the government that the international traders are strategically using the impact on farmers for their benefits.

But if the duty is not removed the textile industry is bound to be doomed, he said. (KNN Bureau)
