Hyderabad: The annual urs celebrations at the Dargah of Hazrath Baba Sharfuddin Suhrwardi, popularly known as the Dargah Pahadishareef located about 12 km from Charminar, commenced on Sunday and with a series of programmes lined up, will continue till Saturday.
The celebrations are being held on a grand scale after two years as they were on a low scale and suspended in view of Covid triggered lockdowns and restrictions last two times. Around 2 lakh people are expected to visit the hilltop shrine of the Sufi Saint Syednah Baba Sharfuddin.
The first sandal procession is taken out from Balapur, where the saint is believed to have stayed for almost 11 years, and reached Pahadishareef. Two important offerings are made by the HEH Nizam Trust and the state government through the Pahadishareef police.
The history of the saint goes back to 11th century, according to Alhaj Peerzada Syed Fareeduddin, caretaker of the shrine. The saint Baba Sharfuddin Suhrwardi came to the Deccan in 1190 from Baghdad via Delhi and settled in a neighbourhood known as Balapur some 5 km from the place where the shrine is located.
“The local people held him in high respect and visited him to seek fulfillment of their wishes. After a few years, he climbed the hillock and decides to stay for his prayers, said Syed Fariduddin adding several noblemen sought help at the dargah. Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb built the structure over the grave of the Baba and the sixth Nizam Mir Mahbub Ali Khan constructed the big hall with multiple columns and multi-cusped arches. The steps on the hillock were chiseled during the time of last Nizam ruler Mir Osman Ali Khan. At the foothill of the shrine is a Deorhi built by Paigah nobleman Iqbal Ud Dowla.
