Academic and translator Kathryn Hansen is an expert in the history of theatrical practices in South Asia, gender and performance, South Asian literary and cultural studies, and South Asian – Hindi and Urdu – diaspora, ethnicity, and immigration. Can you talk a little about the role of translation in your work? When have texts alone proved inadequate? When has it become necessary to supplement your texts with visual materials, appendices, and glossaries?Translation has come to mean a lot of things to me. Fundamentally, translation is a bridge of communication that connects different groups by carrying meaning from one to the other.
