In India’s social hierarchy OBCs, as they are generally known, consist of a vast number of castes that sit between the upper castes and the Dalits and Adivasis, or Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. They are generally believed to account for more than half of the Indian population, though we don’t actually know the numbers.
