GHMC to use bio-mining, bioremediation techniques for disposal of solid waste #IndiaNEWS #Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will employ bio-mining and bioremediation techniques to ensure suitable and sustainable disposal of solid wastes at the Jawaharnagar legacy dumpsite.
Biomining of legacy dump sites is typically aided by bioremediation, a unique process that involves microbe-mediated degradation of organic waste carried out by adding bio-organisms that enable composting. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recommends ‘bioremediation’ for treatment of legacy waste and reclamation of old dumpsites.
As part of this initiative, GHMC has invited a request for proposal (RFP) bid from reputed firms for disposal of legacy waste from the Jawaharnagar dumpsite.
Bio-mining and Bioremediation process involves the conversion of old dumpyard material into reusable resources by treating the waste. As part of the method adopted, environmental conditions will be changed to grow microorganisms that will treat pollutants.
The main activity will include bio-mining and bioremediation of the already capped legacy dumpsite duly removing various layers of the dump capping for land reclamation, disposal of recovered materials with appropriate disposal certificate and disposal of residual solid wastes into engineered landfills.
Construction of a leachate treatment plant for leachate management and gas management from existing gas vents and stabilisation of soil of the reclaimed land is another key activity that will be taken up at Jawahar Nagar.
The civic body aims to complete the task in 36 months, which includes initial three months for site preparation and mobilisation of men and machinery.
The State government had already spent Rs.146 crore on capping the dumpyard and started a 20MW waste-to-energy plant as well. In addition, funds were also sanctioned for leachate treatment. In December 2021, the Ministry of Environment and Forest gave a nod for one more 28 MW waste to energy plant at Jawahar Nagar.
